Is a program that gives those with the need to use Spanish in a medical setting (physicians, nurses, dentists and health assistants) the opportunity to focus their language learning while being immersed in the Ecuadorian culture.
The program includes formal classroom study, as well as visits to local hospitals, medical schools, rural health programs.
LANGUAGE INSTRUCTION: In the morning students receive 4 hours intensive language instruction with emphasis on medical lexicon. Classes are held in groups or one-to-one, for all three levels. Syllabus includes guest lectures and interviews. A High Intermediate (B2) level of Advanced (C1) level is required before they start any medical practice. (Placement exam necessary, each level requires 60 hours)
MEDICAL PRACTICE: In the afternoons students will be working with medical professionals and public health experts. Program can include visits to the public hospital and medical school, if possible discussion and demonstration of Andean shamanism and observation of a shamanic cleansing.
OPTIONAL RURAL EXPERIENCE: Students have the choice of traveling to nearby sites in Atocha or Zumbagua to work in the hospital, help in day care nurseries, visit indigenous houses to provide help and advise.
HOUSING OPTIONS: Participants will have the choice of living with an Ecuadorian family that will provide three meals a day and laundry service, or, to stay in the hostel
